Wet vs electric

Wet systems

Pipes carrying heated water run beneath the floor, usually connected to a boiler. Often suited to larger areas or whole-house installations.

Electric systems

Heating cables or mats sit beneath the floor and run off the electricity supply. Often simpler to retrofit into a single room, such as a bathroom or kitchen.

Why people choose it

  • Even heat distribution across the whole floor
  • No radiators taking up wall or floor space
  • Generally runs at lower temperatures than radiators
  • Works well under most floor types

Suitability for period properties

Brighton & Hove has a lot of older housing stock, where floor build-up and joist depth can be a real constraint. Electric systems in particular can suit period properties well, since they generally need minimal floor build-up compared with a wet system. The right choice depends on the property, so it’s worth talking through the options for your home specifically.

Fantastic service – new boiler and heating system installed perfectly

I needed a new boiler and central heating system. After getting a couple of quotes, I chose Lee from Pierson Heating. He took the time to explain the different options and helped me choose what would work best for my home. The installation of the new combi boiler, radiators, and pipework was done exactly as I wanted. I’ve already recommended him to friends and family.

I have used On Heating for several years mainly for servicing and breakdowns. They have proved to be very reliable and I would not hesitate to recommend their services. Most recently I have had a new Vaillant boiler installed by them. The price was competitive, especially if one takes into account the 10-year manufacturer's warranty, that is only issued when approved installers carry out the work using manufacturer's specified parts. Lee carried out the work with minimum disruption and no mess and all waste removed. An excellent job all round.

Exceptional Company

This Companies workmanship when installing our new boiler and radiators was out of this world. Lee and Pete were always on time, exceptionaly tidy and really courtious. It was a pleasure having them work here as we have never had the carpet everywhere hoovered after a days work. Pete is an amazing engineer and Lee came after the work was finished to explain everything we needed to know after the install including the Hive which connects to your phone so you can work the heat in the house when you are out. If you want the best Lee and Pete offer exceptional service. Best service ever.

Saved the day! Our tap suddenly stopped working and water continued to fall out of the tap. It was broken on the inside and we panicked. Lee came to our rescue and after stopping the water he waited until we got a resolution from the supplier so it can be fixed. He was both professional and kind.

The nicest tradesperson in Brighton!

Lee is the nicest tradesperson we used whilst living in Brighton. He fitted a new boiler for us about 8 years ago and serviced it every year since as well as doing gas safety checks and servicing a gas fire. Lovely person and great at what he does and we would highly recommend him. We have sadly moved from Brighton but will recommend him to our buyers. Thanks so much Lee!

Called Lee at 9am and by 11am he was at mine and fixed the boiler! Lee is friendly, knowledgeable and always gives a 5* service! Highly recommend Lee and his work!

Leaking Boiler

After a very bad dishonest experience with a 24 hr. Call out service guy who was trying to scam me the previous day, got in touch with Lee and what a contrast! The previous day I was told that I will need a new boiler but Lee found that all it needs is a replacement valve and nothing else was wrong with the boiler and he got it working in no time. I am pleased that I have now found a honest and efficient plumber and will be using him again for all plumbing problems.

Central Heating System Annual Service

I contacted Pierson Heating as my central heating system was overdue for its annual service. Lee did the service quickly and efficiently. He also answered a couple of questions I had about maintaining the system during the year. I'll be happy to book him again for next year's service.

Underfloor heating FAQs

What’s the difference between wet and electric underfloor heating?

Wet systems circulate heated water through pipes beneath the floor, usually connected to a boiler. Electric systems use heating cables or mats run off the electricity supply. Wet systems tend to suit larger areas, electric systems tend to suit single-room retrofits.

Can it work with my existing boiler?

Generally, yes, a wet underfloor heating system can usually be connected to an existing boiler. Get in touch and we can confirm what will work with your setup.

Is it suitable for a period property?

It can be. Electric systems in particular often need minimal floor build-up, which can make them a better fit where floor depth or joist height is limited. It depends on the property, so it’s best assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Does it cost more to run than radiators?

It depends on the system, your insulation, and how the heating is used, so there isn’t a single answer that applies to every home. We’re happy to talk through what makes sense for your property.
